Kpop has become extremely popular thanks to BTS and Black Pink. But these are just a few idol groups who represent South Korea. Let me tell you about a few Korean hiphop artists.
I love music. I love listening to it while I drive, walk, and from time to time, vacuum the house. I’ve actually been making music since highschool and the genre I fell in love with was hip hop. I’ve been listening to it ever since. True, as I’ve gotten older some songs that I loved to hear back when I was younger are…well hard to listen to now. But the genre itself still holds a special part in my heart and I wanted to share with the world a few Korean artists that I love.
Changmo — recommended song: “Maestro’
Changmo released his first debut album in 2016. In the same year he joined the famous hip hop label ‘Ambition Musik’ which was created by some of the most influential hip hop artists of South Korea ‘The Quiett and Dok2’ (you can think of them as Korea’s Snoop Dogg and Doctor Dre). Before his debut album he actually was playing some of the piano background music for Dok2’s tracks, seeing he had been playing piano for a very long time and was pondering to go pro as a pianist.
He loves to use autotune and sings a fair chunk of his of songs as well. Normally I don’t prefer autotone but Changmo uses it in a way that is actually quite nice to listen to. Currently he’s one of the most influential hip hop artists in Korea and being a fan of him for a long time, it’s great to see him rise to success.
Bewhy — recommended song: “The Time Goes On’
Bewhy released his first album iin 2015 and the title of the album is the song I recommended above. He rose to fame after competing in the hip hop competition program ‘Show Me The Money’ season 5 in 2016 and winning first place. I actually was listening to his music before he pacticipated in ‘Show Me The Money’ and after listening to ‘The Time Goes On’, I just knew this guy was going to be famous in a few years.
Bewhy is particuarly known for writing a lot of his songs about God. He’s very open about his Christianity which was extremely unusual for Korean hip hop artists. Most artists who try to show how tough they were or how many girls they could fit in their car but Bewhy would constantly rap about how he knew God would guide him to greatness. These lyrics were not only fresh to the ear but also interesting to listen to as it evolved as he became more and more famous.
Lil Boi — recommended song: “On Air”
Lil Boi has been around for a really long time. He first started getting attention back in 2011 when he released his debut album “Officially Missing You” where he was part of a duo group called “Geeks”. Yep, the title song was a remix version of the famous “Officially Missing You” sung by Tamia and it was a huge hit in Korea.
Currently Lil Boi has become hugely popular by winning ‘Show Me The Money’ season 9 this year. He made various songs on the program, almost all of which became huge hits. The song I recommended above is also a song he made and performed on Show Me The Money.
For me, I particular enjoyed his mixtape album ‘Good Time’. It’s probably one of my most favorite mixtape albums, one of those rare types which almost all of the songs, not just the title, are all good. It’s been almost 8 year since it was first created but even now, its great to listen to. Here’s one of the tracks I enjoyed titled ‘City Lights’. If you listen carefully, you might hear a very familiar voice on the track.
These are just a few of the many talented hip hop artists of South Korea. As a fan of hip-hop, I’m always excited to listen to new talent and fresh music. That being said, I’ll probably make another post later on, introducing some other artists that I love to listen to during the time I write.
